DIVIDED BY THOUGHT:
ARE YOU STUCK AT THE BOOK CLUB LEVEL?
Enough. Hopefully, this title was soft, yet firm, enough to blow against your inner flame of comfort and inspire you to read past the headline.
Trying to reach European Americans ears and eyes is hard. It is so hard, that it is (now) an artform, you see. A hook of familiarity has to be dangled you - a hook that tells the white person, you are safe enough here to discuss this taboo subject. Yes, you will experience discomfort, but not so much discomfort that you leave the communication without learning something.
I have never been able to teach anyone anything by beating them up or down. The goal is to have you learn something. And, in learning, hopefully you are inspired to change your behaviors. Or, this is the theory. Under hyper-individualistic thinking change occurs one person at a time. Literally.
In the European American mind, consent is individual-to-individual. Success does not lie in making a mass appeal. Group dynamics are shunned. Change happens when individuals change. So, rather than speak to a crowd, speak directly to the individual.
The change I want to make lies within the realm of social interactions, specifically centering race. When it comes to breaking the taboo over talking about race, racism, and whiteness, social media is the safest option for many white people. It is the medium that offers the least amount of emotional charge. If an exchange becomes too uncomfortable, it is easy to dis-engage, with low risk of repercussions in real life. Interestingly, the need to mitigate risk, due to how violent European America is, produces a paradox. Individual European Americans get to see the true condition that their neighbors occupy with greater clarity than ever before because of the protective distance provided by social media. The nice, mild-mannered, professional personas used in public mask a very centrally racist personality that the white-bodied person learning the truth finds hard to process. From appearance and public presentation alone, it is hard to see who in a white body is a white supremacist or not.
As evident by the reaction to the Charlie Kirk assassination by another white man, the more of an open white supremacy this Second Trump Administration reveals itself to be, the more insecure the masses of European Americans are revealed to be.
In stark contrast to public data of how violent the average European American is, that is not what is internalized. No. The majority of European Americans view themselves as safe individual personalities who have to make themselves into a threat. To imagine that, thanks to public opinion, they, as a group, are considered an inherent threat who have to prove themselves safe, over and over again, comes as a shock. It is an affront upon the culture of individualism. Each individual is to be judged by the content of their character, not the group affiliation. To focus on group identity is to practice injustice. To see a person as white first is reverse racism? How is it a solution to punish every individual white person for the sins of a few that the individual has no control to stop or correct?
I teach that individualism is a lie. It is one of the fifteen characteristics of white supremacy and cannot be proven true outside of the oppressor caste. On November 5, 2024, a group decision was made. 3 out of 5 voting European American men and 1 out of 2 voting European American women decided to return Mr. Donald J. Trump to office. At the time of these words being published, we are 261 days into this second administration.
Thankfully, the current events of injustice are becoming intense enough that ordinary European Americans, who try to protect themselves from racial tension by isolating from the news, can no longer isolate. The news is happening on their doorstep. Each headline confirms what I keep saying: Black, Brown, and Indigenous people lack the luxury of honoring the taboo about not discussing race, racism, and whiteness. I am a Black man living inside the United States. Acting as if racism is not going to affect my behaviors and choices is not a viable option for me.
This communication (?) is centered around talking to those who are just now waking up.
I call this stage being awakened from the book club level. It is imagined at this level that racism is extreme bullying based on someone’s skin color. When anti-racism/pro-humanity educators living in Black bodies reveal that their inner reality can not find any common ground in such a definition because it does not reflect the educator’s lived experience with the oppressive system that is United States society, the European American drawn into discussion, once again, melts down into confusion.
If being white is its own reality, with its own perspective, that Black, Brown, and Indigenous people cannot occupy or share common ground with because whiteness, by the very nature of the social construct, defines itself as the polar opposite of the Black, Brown, or Indigenous body, the individual personality living in a white body cries out for help.
On TikTok, again, where white people feel safe enough to break the taboo about talking about race, we anti-racism educators are getting a lot of feedback from those who wish to divest themselves from "whiteness," who state they feel "ALONE."Under one of my own videos, which reached a modest 22,000 persons, there are hundreds of comments demonstrating what I mean by the book club level.
Book club level European Americans:
Swear on everything they know to be holy that the United States of America is a meritocracy. Meaning, business is business. It is not politics. It is not skin color. It is goods available and services provided. Can you do what you say you can do for this amount of money? That is the kind of America the personality living in a white body sincerely believes is always in effect. At the personal level, when you can punch me in the face with the same force as I can punch you back in the face, suddenly, there is peace because neither one of us wants to be punched in the face. This is an English conception. Think Magna Carta in England. This is peace through the cancellation of force. You can’t do something to me that I cannot do back to you. That is equality. Equal access to risk. If you can do something to me that I cannot do back to you, then it is inherently unjust. This is binary thinking, however, so seductive that many adopt it as wisdom. Peace is attained through strength!
I treat everyone the same. Some studies show that almost 3 out of 4 European Americans live, work, and play in a predominantly white-bodied atmosphere. They do not have friendships with non-white people outside of professional settings. If they do have said relationships, they are along colonial standards of respectability politics.
Talks about the news as if racism is not a factor in the everyday life of Black, Brown and Indigenous people. Talks as if banks and doctors and all the businesses that they, as individual personalities living in white bodies, interact with are NOT threats waiting to happen to every Black, Brown, and Indigenous person they encounter independent of you. Likewise, race does not figure into this individual’s conception of how they moved through the spaces that they moved through, and their whiteness was in effect helping them be seen and treated as a human being.
Experience Black, Brown, and Indigenous people as just darker versions of themselves. They truly believe they are having a generic human experience and everyone else around them is having a similar inner experience with their inner feelings/emotions and aches/pains within the body. Many, if not all, European Americans are shocked to learn their personal results after taking an implicit bias test.
Sincerely believe the English immigrated to Turtle Island, as we know the landmass called North America in 2025, and it was not a military invasion by company towns financed by the best and brightest minds of 1600 - 1800s England.
Refuses to believe George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were slave masters and could not see Black people as fellow human beings. Instead, they think Washington and Jefferson just ignored Black people’s humanity. “After all, they could talk to Black people. How do you dehumanize someone you can talk to and reason with? Washington and Jefferson had to see Black people as human simply by direct interaction with a Black person,” the white person argues. It is wild to imagine the capacity to experience Black people as human beings is only two generations old; that previous generations, like those born into Mr. Trump’s generation, lack that capacity. The Civil Rights Movement was only one lifetime ago. That means segregation, as enforced by ordinary European American behavior, was only one lifetime ago.
Feels impotent to do anything because of the identity forced upon them by their social position. Whiteness makes a demand of their participation in a manner they feel helpless to resist because, in their minds, it is the only way to secure access to resources. To be boycotted, or frozen out of trade, is considered a declaration of war against the individual. The individual then, per the culture, has the right to defend themselves.
Refuses to accept the conclusions given to us by the Cherry Blossom Experiment.
Most at the book club level know, despite their boundaries, the United States is a racial caste system. Some may be overcompensating due to how shitty it feels to live under an open white supremacy. Many concluded as children that their family of origin is/was racist. Making the conscious decision to not follow the pathway and mannerisms of their family of origin was the bravest thing some of them have ever done. To do so, they "used" individualism to become their own person and not follow the pathway and mannerisms demonstrated by their family of origin. They befriended Black, Brown, and Indigenous people. Some even became lovers. They do not know what more anti-racism/pro-human educators want from them. Aren’t they already doing everything that can be done?
The answer is yes, there is much, much more than can be done.
But those at the book club level cannot hear that kind of answer.
For them, racism is an intellectual exercise. It is never happening as them. Despite freeing themselves from overt racism, many European Americans are slowly learning they can never fully be received by any "non-white" community because the larger white America still treats them—the rebellious white-bodied individual—as "white." It doesn't matter if the white body is married to an Asian man or has biracial children; Wells Fargo is going to give them a loan at 72% over their ethnic partner or children (47%.)
When asked to "use" their whiteness to betray the caste and produce justice-based results, activists are told it "hurts" to be "used" in this manner. For them it is a lose/lose situation. Racial awareness is the pain of knowing you are being treated as a white body at all times. Your social position is being forced on you against your will, and there is nothing your individual will can do anything effective about. No matter what you do about where you live, what you eat, the music that you listen to, how you dress, or who becomes your friends, because of the racial caste system, you are still perceived as "white," and that affects everything.
So, then, the white individual seeks to find a "white community" where they fit in of those white-bodied persons aware that we live in a racial caste system, yet they want to dismantle it, because no matter what solution they come up with THROUGH and IN their individual personality, it does not seem to work. The medicine that anti-racism/pro-humanity educators offer is too bitter for those at the book club level to stomach.
