“With very rare exceptions, white-bodied people – whose ancestry has been almost exclusively one of colonialism – cannot … dig deep enough into our history without finding the fluttering of locust wings. That sickness is our foundation – and it is the starting point in our recovery.”
Danél F. Griffin never meant to be an anti-racist educator. A former Southern Baptist preacher raised in the Church, Griffin left the ministry in 2006 and began his own healing journey from Evangelical Christian indoctrination. For the past five years, he has become an outspoken and prolific exvangelical activist; he now leads the charge in offering resources for those who are deconstructing from toxic and abusive theology. But as his own deconstruction journey continued, Griffin’s education led him to look deeper into the roots for which Christianity has historically been weaponized to both maintain and perpetuate. Behind the evangelical veil, Griffin discovered colonialism spread through a parasitic religion designed for assimilation and manifested most predominantly in Western culture in the form of White Supremacy.
This collection of four essays is a continuation of Griffin’s education in the mechanizations of white supremacy – written to aid in the education of fellow white-bodied people ready to start their own healing journey out of our racist identities. In the first three essays, Griffin lays out and sources the history and psychology of white supremacy through examples of ways it has manifested in both the world and the United States. In the fourth essay, he uses his experience as an exvangelical activist to suggest paths that white-bodied people can take to be part of the solution – if we choose to be brave together and out of white supremacy hand-in-hand.”
