On this day in 2021, a group of agitated political protestors attacked the building in which Congress was certifying the results of the 2020 election because they did not believe their candidate had legitimately lost. The coup by a would-be dictator failed, not because they did not have enough political, financial, or constituency influence or power, but because the infrastructure of the national political system was not behind them.
Now we stand here, four years later, with the same monarchian-minded candidate to be certified as the next President of the United States. In 14 days, we will hand “the keys to the kingdom” to a man who has used up and thrown away every political ally he has ever had. A man who has proven to be untrustworthy with sensitive national documents. A man who courts fascism with gifts of praise. A man who has shown us his disregard for human life at every opportunity, especially if it’s a brown or black life. A man who sees his own flesh and blood as a breedable piece of meat.
We are watching history in the future rather than in the past as we are accustomed, yet we are just as powerless to change it.
Why?
