Surviving No Access to Prosperity, S.N.A.P
Oh SNAP, here we are, reduced to the cobwebs in our cupboards. Either we fold on the food, or fold on our health. Why would the administration use hunger pains as a bargaining tool? The original argument had nothing to do with the other. Just a cruel reminder that we really have little to no control over anything that is happening in the world. What a harrowing reality.
Oh SNAP, 40 days of a shutdown, and what did we accomplish? It’s “over” or is it really? Or has it just begun? I have no words to describe the frustration I feel as a black woman with two young children in the midst of the uncertainty in our nation. It is embarrassing to see that people with so much influence and education can’t figure out solutions won’t only benefit the 1%. There are talks about 50-year mortgages. What does that mean for me? Will I ever buy a home at this point? It is starting to feel like going back to school was a bit of a wash.
Oh SNAP, what I do know is that this sharp shift in administration has forced people to be more in tune with their community. I am seeing more mutual aid groups, community service, bartering, and skill shares. I hope this momentum does not die out like it did in 2020. Can you imagine the impact if we kept going? Now is the time to make the changes necessary. Even if it is a damn lie. Oh SNAP.
