The Iceberg of Whiteness

We are 85 days into a second Trump administration and an open White Supremacy. While putting the finishing touches on a workshop, discussing the system that we live in, a thought grew with a very close friend and I’s conversation.
White Supremacy Culture isn’t shaped like a pyramid, like most of us who share a white body conceptualize. After some deep conversations and studying, White Supremacy is an iceberg.
Starting at the top of the iceberg is “White” society. A smooth, frozen landscape built on socio-economic power. This is the caste system we (European Americans) currently conceptualize. When talking to white progressives, a common theme is “No War but Class War”. This pyramid is what is being referred to. The rich landowners, ceo’s, and political heads hoarding all the wealth from the lower, middle class, and working class of the socio-economic pyramid.
This conceptualization is leaving out a key ingredient in the structure of our society with in the western colonized world.
The Racial Caste System
European Americans understands that Race exists within in our culture. Thanks to the conditioning we now know as “White Supremacy Culture” certain key characteristics developed to uphold the racial caste system. The 15 Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture outlined by Tema Okun*.
These characteristics create a “waterline” between Racial groups. White People above it, all other racial and ethnic groups below it. If the water line is crossed, a reaction is generated within the White body to perform “White Racial Violence. This waterline is upheld through the difference in interaction of “Individualism” and social “Collectivism”. White People only interact collectively when the waterline is upheld. We will work together, eat together, go to church with each other. We will stay in community. As soon as the structure of “Whiteness” is breached, we fall into the characteristics as a survival mechanism. Violently attacking not only each other, but whatever racialized concept breach the social dynamic of “Race”.
Race sets up a social construct that allows for two separate “realities” to occur. The reality of collective humanity and community and the reality of rugged individualism will allow you to climb “the social ladder”. While economic injustice is still occurring, the socialization of Race adds layers below the economic pyramid to create a hyper exploitation in Europe. Whites are now placed above all other racialized groups.
Climbing this social ladder has been proven to be a lie. Economic injustice is still happening among European Americans, however it is now hyper extended to all other racial and ethnic groups that do not align with “White”. Allowing for European Americans to become the social upholders of exploitation. We are the racial “police” upholding this iceberg.
Steps to Breach the Waters of “White Racial Violence”
Through the characteristics of White Supremacy Culture, we face a what we feel is an insurmountable hurdle. Jump into the waters of White Racial Violence or keep ourselves on the White pyramid, clinging onto a surface we are not meant to survive on. While this leap generates a “freeze” reaction in European Americans, we are being viewed from the bottom of the Racial iceberg as complicit. What are some ways we can condition ourselves to leap in the waters of humanity?
