What is privilege?
What is privilege, you may ask? When this word is mentioned, various thoughts and opinions buzz through the room. But what is it really?
Privilege is when you can walk into a store without the fear of being accused of stealing
When you can get pulled over, and get irritated instead of fearful
When you can carry a child and get asked how excited your husband is, and not if the father stayed
When you can “not see color”
When you can dismiss a minority voice and not think twice
When you can see yourself represented in media, society and politics without a second thought
When you don’t have to have the “talk” with your children about police
When you don’t have to worry about your passion being taken for anger
When you don’t have to overcompensate to make people feel safe around you
When you didn’t have to see “The first _____” in 2025
When you don’t have to wonder if your son will make it home
When you don’t have to worry about your daughter being called fast or grown, she’s just expressive and creative
When the SNAP conversation never hits your table
When microaggressions at work are spun so you come off “too sensitive.”
When nobody has tried to touch your hair
Privilege…what is it?
